Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
