EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
